From IQ to Timing (天時), Environment (地利), and Human Connection (人和): Rethinking the Factors of Success
By Dr. Jian Zhang
For decades, discussions about success have focused primarily on individual capability.
We talk about intelligence (IQ), emotional intelligence (EQ), hard work, resilience, and
leadership. Modern management theory has helped us understand why some individuals
consistently outperform others. Yet these explanations are incomplete.
If success were determined solely by personal ability, why do highly talented individuals
sometimes fail to thrive? Why do organizations with exceptional people struggle while others
achieve extraordinary results? Perhaps we need a broader perspective.
The Western Perspective: Developing the Individual
Modern leadership research largely focuses on one question: What makes an individual
successful?
The answers are familiar:
Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence
Discipline
Character
Learning Agility
These capabilities matter. They form the foundation of personal and professional growth.
In many ways, Western leadership theory is a study of self-improvement.
Its central question is: How do I become better?
The Eastern Perspective: Understanding the System
Traditional Chinese wisdom begins with a different question: How do I align myself with the
world around me? For centuries, Chinese thinkers emphasized three interconnected forces:
Tian Shi天時 (Timing)
Di Li 地利 (Environment)
Ren He 人和 (Human Connection)
The underlying insight is profound: Success is not created by individuals alone.
It emerges from the interaction between people, circumstances, and relationships.
Timing天時: Seeing the Trend
Effort is important. Direction is even more important. Every era creates opportunities for those who recognize change before others do. Today, artificial intelligence, demographic shifts, digital transformation, and globalization are reshaping industries and institutions. The leaders who thrive will not simply work harder. They will understand where the world is heading.
Environment地利: Creating the Conditions
Talent matters. But environment matters too. The same individual can achieve dramatically
different outcomes under different conditions. Great leaders do more than develop people.
They create cultures, systems, and organizations where people can succeed. Success requires fertile ground.
Human Connection人和: Multiplying Impact
No meaningful achievement is accomplished alone.
Innovation requires collaboration.
Transformation requires trust.
Leadership requires alignment.
Organizations gain a competitive advantage not merely from having smart people, but from
creating high levels of trust and shared purpose. Human connection transforms individual
capability into collective achievement.
Self-Cultivation: The Foundation
Eastern philosophy does not ignore personal growth, quite the opposite.
The concept of self-cultivation emphasizes the continuous development of capability, character, discipline, and wisdom.
Without self-cultivation, opportunities are missed.
Without self-cultivation, favorable conditions are wasted.
Without self-cultivation, trust cannot be sustained.
A More Complete Framework
Perhaps success is best understood through a more integrated lens:
Success = Self-Cultivation × Timing × Environment × Human Connection
Self-Cultivation develops capability.
Timing provides direction.
Environment creates opportunity.
Human Connection generates collective strength.
Western leadership teaches us how to improve ourselves.
Eastern wisdom teaches us how to understand the larger system.
The future belongs to those who can do both.
Conclusion
An ancient Chinese saying observes:
The skilled strategist focuses on momentum
The unskilled strategist focuses on individual moves
The most successful people do more than optimize themselves, they understand the larger
game. They recognize emerging opportunities, create enabling environments, and bring people together around a shared purpose.
Success, ultimately, is not only about who we are.
It is also about how well we align ourselves with the forces shaping the world around us.

修身决定能力;
天时决定方向;
地利决定条件;
